The Ashby Canal

Maybe we're bias but, the Ashby Canal really does provide the perfect day trip route. Whether you're heading north or south, the canal and its surroundings are picturesque and there are plenty of stops along the way to visit. Please always check your route on The Canal and River Trust website before departure for any closures or works that might be happening.

North

Stop 1: Dadlington (30 minutes) - You'll first pass the charming village of Dadlington where you can visit St James's church which dates back to the 13th century.  There is a new art installation in the church grounds depicting part of the War of the Roses and Richard III's demise.

Stop 2: Sutton Cheney (1 hour, turning point) - This spot offers a canal-side café serving light bites and full meals, as well as hot and cold drinks.  There is also a 20-minute walk to the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, perfect for a historic detour.

Stop 3: Shenton (1.25 hours, turning point) - Stop here to enjoy a steam train ride and a visit to the glass-blowing studio.

Stop 4: Market Bosworth (2.5 hours, turning point): A lovely market town with several restaurants and a small Co-op supermarket (note that the town centre is a 20 minute walk from the canal). Turn here to head back to the boatyard.

South

Stop 1: Hinckley (1.25 hours, turning point) - Located just after bridge 16, you can moor up after turning and visit Hinckley Boat Club who offer water activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding and canoeing

Stop 2: Burton Hastings (2.5 hours, wide section of canal to turn small boats in) - Continue cruising to reach through glorious open countryside to reach the outskirts of Burton Hastings at bridge 8.  This provides an option to stop for lunch at The Lime Kilns pub on your return for a spot of lunch.

Stop 3: Marston Junction (3.5 hours, turning point) - This is where the Ashby Canal meets the Coventry Canal. This option is only recommended for those who do not wish to moor up to visit an attraction or for those who are happy to eat whilst cruising.
